Hanley Norman Abramson, born in 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, passed away on October 20, 2026 at age 86. He earned a B.S. in Pharmacy from Wayne State University and M.S., Ph.D. degrees at the University of Michigan, where he worked under Joseph H. Burckhalter. After his retirement, he developed the university's first course in pharmacogenomics and played a significant role in the creation of the Metropolitan Detroit Alliance for Minority Participation, a coalition of six Detroit-area universities aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented minorities pursuing careers in science, mathematics, and engineering. He published 59 research papers in international journals in the area of synthetic medicinal chemistry, including six following his retirement. He leaves behind three children, Nathan (Sara Ontiveros), Deborah, and Stephen (Karen Foley).
