Flying out of Detroit keeps getting pricier
DTW fares average $527, and airlines are likely to keep prices rising. The average domestic fare out of Detroit Metro Airport was $527 in Q2, an 18% increase over the national average and higher than both Chicago airports, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Jet fuel prices are causing changes across the airline industry, with higher fares, premium-heavy cabins and fewer flights. Delta Air Lines, the largest airline at Detroit Metro, expects its fuel bill this year to exceed $6 billion above last year's due to rising fuel prices. To protect their bottom lines, airlines are increasing fares and increasing premium seats to increase revenue. Nationwide, airfares rose 22% year over year in September, marking a 10th consecutive monthly increase in the government's airfare price index, which hit an all-time high.
