Ahead of Comerica Park's opening day for the 2024 season on April 5, the Free Press picked five of our favorite bites that are featured on the stadium's menu this year.

In no particular order, our favorites from the media day tasting include:

SmashBurger: Delaware North Sportservice’s double patty burger served on a potato roll hit it out of the park. These burger patties were a perfect medium. The addition of cheese and caramelized onions paired well with the slightly sweet burger sauce.

Andalusia sausage: The housemade sausage from Marrow is sort of their version of chorizo that gets its mildly spicy kick from smoked paprika and Guajillo chiles. According to its executive chef Sarah Welch, marrow’s beef burger is also an interesting flavor that has beef bacon ground into its blend of dry-aged beef.

Arepas: These classic stuffed cornmeal cakes are a South American staple. From the rotating pop-up El Rey de las Arepas in southwest Detroit, options are beef or chicken served with cheese and garlic sauce.

Peel and eat shrimp: Seafood lovers can't go wrong with the peel-and-eat shrimp from Voyager. It’s nicely seasoned, with a hint of spiciness cooled off with Voyager's creamy “comeback sauce.”

Water ice: At the tasting, they served Detroit Water Ice Factory's “Tigers Blood.” It’s a blend of strawberry, watermelon, and coconut. All the flavors tasted in that order. According to a news release, its offerings throughout the season are strawberry lemonade, blue raspberry, and orange cream.

Returning favorites are Green Dot Stables, with its three cheeseburger and truffle fries bundle and an interesting combination of a pierogi topped with sauerkraut, Mornay sauce, and Velveeta. Taqueria El Rey is also back this season and will feature charcoal-grilled chicken wings with its adobo rub and red salsa and street corn nachos.

The Tigers will also have special themed food and beverage items for games on June 21 and Aug. 2. Opening Day is April 5 when the Detroit Tigers play the Oakland Athletics.
