Dearborn's $1.5B bond leads Metro Detroit school asks amid economic concerns

Dearborn is pledging to stop collecting on an operational millage if voters approve the bond ask to overhaul the district's aging infrastructure. Dearborn Public Schools' $1.5 billion bond request is leading the Metro Detroit region's list of school funding asks on the Nov. 3 ballot, amid concerns about inflation. The 30-year bond aims to fully overhaul the district's aging infrastructure over the next 20 years. However, district leaders have pledged to stop collecting on a 2.18 mill operating levy, passed in 2024, if the bond passes, so the difference voters would approve as an increase to school taxes is less than 1 mill. The money would be used to build several new schools and renovate existing ones in a four-phased plan for Michigan's third-largest district. Despite opposition campaigns, other Metro Detroit communities have rejected high-priced loan projects and proposed new tax increases in the past two years.
