22-foot airplane-inspired ‘Oculus’ sculpture dedicated at FWA

Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA)’s new public art installation, ‘Oculus’, was dedicated Tuesday. Artist Gordon Huether has dedicated a 22-foot public art sculpture, ‘Oculus’ at the Fort Wayne airport. The sculpture, which sits directly in front of the airport terminal, is constructed with four pillars shaped like airplane wings and features glass that reflects different colors throughout the day. On the inside of the pillars, images represent Fort Wayne, representing its diverse culture and its aviation industry. Huether said he wanted to center the city and its residents with his designs.

The sculpture, named “Oculus”, was created by artist Gordon Huether and sits directly in front of the airport terminal, between short-term parking and the rental car lot.

The public art piece is constructed with four pillars shaped like airplane wings, with a piece of glass held up by suspended cables at the top that reflect different colors throughout the day. On the inside of the four pillars are images representative of Fort Wayne.

Huether said the people of Fort Wayne inspired his designs for the sculpture, as he wanted to center the city and its residents with his designs.

“The art is never about me, it’s about the people that live here. I’m thinking about an airport so I thought about airplane wings, but a graceful, beautiful shade. And then I thought, well the insides of those could be a canvas for content,” Huether said.

“The content is the music scene here, the agriculture, it’s an international airport, so we have hello in multiple languages, and then we have aviation.”
