Why do some priests leave ministry? New study aims to find out The Catholic University of America has launched a study to investigate why some priests choose to leave their ministry within a few years of ordination. The initiative, funded by the Knights of Columbus, aims to clarify that there is a perception among some bishops and other Catholic leaders that there has been an increase in the number of men leaving priestly ministry in their early years. The study will use quantitative and qualitative methods to study the data set, which will include priests ordained for U.S. dioceses over the past 20 years from 2006 to 2025. The results will be released in the fall of 2027. Researchers will use open-source research, including Google queries on individual priest names, and resources such as The Official Catholic Directory.
