Lions beat Packers 20-17 on last-play field goal to bail out Dan Campbell’s failed 4th-down gamble

DETROIT -- Dan Campbell's latest gamble did not pan out and the Detroit Lions made plays in all three phases -- with some yellow flags that went their way -- to bail out the aggressive coach. Detroit Lions defeated the Green Bay Packers 20-17 in a last-play field goal to bail out coach Dan Campbell, who made a gamble on a fourth-down gamble. Jake Bates, who played soccer at the University of Central Arkansas and will play for the Arkansas Razorbacks in 2022, made a 22-yard field goal as time expired to secure a win for Detroit. Campbell, known for his risk-taking, made the risky move on fourth-and-1 from his 24 with just under 5 minutes to play and Jahmyr Gibbs was stopped for no gain. Rookie Trey Smack missed a 35-yard goal and became the first kicker to miss two field goals from 35 yards or closer in a same game since 2019. The Lions' win puts them in third place in the NFC North behind Minnesota and Chicago. The Packers' three-game winning streak was halted and dropped to last place in North Carolina.
