Fairbanks defeats Tibbetts in White Earth tribal chairman race
Challenger Laura Lee (Thompson) Erickson defeated Tribal Council member Cheryl “Annie" Jackson in the District 3 race for White Earth Tribal Council. DETROIT LAKES — White Earth Tribal Chairman Michael Fairbanks defeated challenger Eugene “Umsy” Tibbetts to win another four-year term in office on Tuesday.
The vote total was 56% to 44%, according to unofficial results released Tuesday evening.
Also in the White Earth General election on Tuesday, challenger Laura Lee (Thompson) Erickson defeated Tribal Council member Cheryl “Annie’ Jackson in the District 3 committeeman race. The vote total in that race was 59% to 41%.
The total number of votes cast in the tribal chairman race was 1,155 votes for Fairbanks and 909 votes for Tibbetts.
Fairbanks did especially well in Naytahwaush and Rice Lake, won in Mahnomen, Pine Point and Minneapolis, and more than doubled Tibbetts’ votes in Cass Lake and the in-person absentee vote.
Tibbetts, a former Tribal Council member, won in White Earth village, Callaway, Ogema and Waubun, and prevailed in a close mail-in absentee vote.
In the district 3 race, the total number of votes cast was 620 votes for Laura Lee Erickson and 423 votes for Jackson.
Erickson won all six on-reservation precincts in District 3 – Ogema, Callaway, White Earth village, Elbow Lake, Callaway and Marble, as well as the in-person absentee vote.
Jackson won in the Minneapolis and Cass Lake precincts and in the mail-in absentee vote.
The General Reservation Election Board will certify the election results on Wednesday and publish the official results on Thursday. Fairbanks and Erickson will start their four-year terms of office on July 8.
