Free events and activities this coming week in the Heartland Lakes area. The events set to take place between April 3-9, 2024. Speakers Heather and Rudy Bacchus will discuss concerns about the impact of high-potency marijuana and THC on brain development in an effort to raise awareness and educate parents, students, and community members about these issues. A job and career fair will be held at Park Rapids Area High School, jointly sponsored by the Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and the Heartland Lakes Development Commission. A free drawing class will be led by Dawn Rossbach, inspired by Riki Scheela's story of the "Shoeshine Boys of Vietnam" at the Bemidji Eagles club. A coffee talk is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. at Northwoods Bank in Park Rapids, with a coffee talk on the topic of THC-Infused Drinks. Hubbard County Republicans meet at 7 p.m., with discussion of trending topics at 6 pm. The monthly meeting of Hubbard County DFL members will also take place at the library.

“Be Extraordinary, Be You!” speakers Heather and Rudy Bacchus will share concerns about today’s high-potency marijuana and THC and their impact on brain development from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Park Rapids Area High School auditorium. The couple raise awareness and educate parents, students and community members after losing their son to cannabis-related psychosis, sharing their personal story to help others make informed decisions backed by science and rooted in reality. Support and resources for parents of youth struggling with addiction will be provided.
A job and career fair will be held at Park Rapids Area High School, jointly sponsored by the Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and the Heartland Lakes Development Commission. The fair will be open to students from 1 to 3 p.m. and to adults from 3:15 to 5 p.m.
Artist Dawn Rossbach will lead a free, side-by-side drawing class from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Armory Arts and Events Center. Beginners and experienced drawers will work side by side, learning the fundamentals and exploring new methods. Note, only beverages in lidded containers are allowed in the studio.
Hubbard County DFL members are invited to their monthly meeting, with discussion of trending topics at 6 p.m. in the Park Rapids Area Library basement meeting room and a business meeting at 7 p.m. Contact [email protected] for information.
Hubbard County Republicans meet at 7 p.m. at Abide Vineyard Church, 17765 State Hwy. 34, east of Park Rapids. Social hour begins at 6:30 p.m.
Adventures in Lifelong Learning presents “The Shoeshine Boys of Vietnam” at the Bemidji Eagles club. Riki Scheela was in Vietnam in 1998. She saw a boy shivering in the cold winter and took him to purchase a jacket. Like magic, five more boys showed up. She became close to these “shoeshine boys,” and 20 years later she found them turned into men. They wanted Riki to meet their families. She describes this as one of the most meaningful and profound experiences of her life. Refreshments will be offered at 9:30 a.m. with the program from 10 to 11 a.m. and questions and answers until 11:30 a.m. For more information, email [email protected].
Join local leaders and experts for a coffee talk from 10 to 11 a.m. at Northwoods Bank in Park Rapids. The topic is “The New ‘Alcohol’: THC-Infused Drinks.” There will be a short presentation followed by questions and conversation, jointly organized by Hubbard in Prevention, CHI St. Joseph’s Health Community Health, Stellher Human Services, Family Safety Network, Kinship of Park Rapids and Park Rapids Area Schools.
