Undefeated, undisputed women’s middleweight Claressa Shields (14-0, 2 KOs) put on a feat at the Little Caesars Saturday night, beating out-choice challenger Maricela Cornejo (16-6, 6 KOs) by a terribly one-sided ten-round unanimous decision Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

Cornejo was in survival mode throughout the 10-round contest, circling and trying not to get hit by Claressa’s wide hooks. Each round, Shields landed powerful shots that snapped Cornejo’s head back. The results: 100-89, 100-90, 100-90

Surprisingly, Cornejo took the punches well and kept moving around the ring to thwart Shield’s attempts to take them out. In the fourth round, Cornejo hit with a nice right hand that Shields caught clean while executing a punch.

This was easily Cornejo’s best shot of the match as she mainly used jabs and defended with her back foot which reduced the power of her punches.

Shields went out of his way to get a knockout on 36-year-old Cornejo by scoring numerous powerful shots from the loop in the early rounds. However, the accuracy of Shields’ shots was very poor as she kept missing due to her high charge.

In the seventh round, Shields went all out, rushing into Cornejo, hitting her in the head and body, using everything she had with every shot. Somehow Cornejo managed to get out of the ring without going down after taking a lot of punishment from Shields.

Shields took a breather in the eighth, boxing deftly behind her jab and showing Olympic talent. Claressa couldn’t miss her shots in the rounds and the reason is because she didn’t load as much anymore.

In the 20 seconds of the round, Shields lunged at Cornejo, pinning her on the ropes and landing several powerful punches that snapped her head back.

Shields looked tired in rounds nine and ten, losing some power on her punches and allowing Cornejo to survive. She still landed a few nice shots on Cornejo, but not as many as she did when she was fresh.

All in all, it was a good performance from Shields against an opponent who was way above her class in terms of talent.

It’s a moral victory for Cornejo that she was able to go the entire 10 rounds without once being knocked down or knocked down. That’s more of an indication that Shields isn’t a big puncher and has stamina issues. The way Shields fought tonight, she was more of an eight-round fighter than a ten-round fighter.

Boxing fans want Shields to give Savannah Marshall a rematch. This is the fight they want to see but it’s fair to say that Shields didn’t enjoy fighting the tenacious Marshall as she was hit by some heavy punches in her recent win over the British fighter. Although Shields won, Marshall landed some punches that would have knocked out most players in the division.
